An emergency locator signal light system (20), for installation at a residence or business, which in a monitor mode (256) is responsive to the dialing of a predetermined emergency telephone number, such as "911", to enter a command mode (272). In the command mode (272), the system (20) is responsive to predetermined tone dialing signal sequences, which are termed "Star Codes", to activate an included signal light device (22). Exemplary "Star Codes" are "*1" for a medical emergency, whereupon red lights (44) and white lights (40) alternatively flash; "*2" for a fire emergency, whereupon a white light flashes; and "*3" for a police emergency, whereupon blue lights (42) and white lights (40) alternatively flash. The "Star Codes" can be dialed either locally from any telephone set (436) or other dialing device or by an emergency telecommunicator who makes a decision to activate the signal light device (22).
