Multi-channel electrophoretic separation device

A multi-channel separator has two elements (12,14), at least one having an array of at least 3 cavities (16-32) forming a serpentine fluid path when the elements are assembled together. Each cavity has a fluid input and output port and flow between these is streamlined by restricting free flow without preventing solute transport between adjacent cavities. Streamlining may be provided by a narrow passage or a septum (40) between the elements. A septum may be a monofilament screen,filter, fritted disc, membrane, or gel with covalently bound buffer forming a pH gradient. Also claimed is an isoelectric focussing or electrophoresis appts. using the separator and with a pumped recycling loop for each cavity and a sealable pulse trap connected to each loop.
