<p>A seal module (6) Fig 1 for use with a trocar system provides a gas-tight seal with a surgical instrument having a diameter within a wide range of diameters. The module incorporates an instrument sealing disc 30, with an aperture that can be stretched to provide a seal about an instrument. A cannula body (4) is manufactured to allow free lateral movement of the complete seal module within the cannula body. A thin wall tube 20 is attached to the seal module body and is locked to the cannula body to prevent gas escaping whatever lateral position the seal module adopts. This gives the instrument when inserted in the seal module, freedom of lateral movement without loss of gas pressure. The ability of the seal module to move with the instrument is achieved by the seals in the seal module having greater resistance to deformation than the thin walled tube. The module can be easily removed from the cannula. It can be manufactured as a disposable unit and discarded after a single use or it may be removed from the cannula, cleaned and resterilised.</p> |
