PURPOSE: To reduce the sticking of foreign matter to a transfer means and to easily and surely execute cleaning by specifying the averaged foam diameter of the transfer means. CONSTITUTION: After a transfer material passed through a transfer roller 5, this transfer roller 5 with toner 13 stuck to the surface is pressed on a photoreceptor drum 1, while the polarity of bias supply 12 for the transfer roller 5 is switched. At this time, the toner 13 stuck onto the transfer roller 5 is moved onto the drum 1 and removed by a cleaning blade 8. Moreover, it is desirable that positive and negative biases are alternately applied or the bias having the polarity opposite to that at the time of transferring is applied, to the transfer roller 5, when the toner 13 stuck to the transfer roller 5 is removed. In these cases, the averaged foam diameter of the roller 5 is set 1μm to 300μm, so that cleanability can be made excellent.
