PURPOSE: To obtain a barium titanate precursor composition providing a high- purity sintered compact having uniform very small particle diameters by dissolving equimolar amounts of a titanium alkoxide and a barium alkoxide in an alcohol-based mixed solvent at a prescribed concentration. CONSTITUTION: A solute comprising equimolar amounts of a titanium alkoxide of formula I and a barium alkoxide of formula II is dissolved in a mixed solvent of one or more lower alcohols of formula III and an alcohol of formula IV to give a barium titanate precursor composition composed of a metal alkoxide precursor solution having >=0.7mol/l titanium alkoxide and barium alkoxide concentrations. Then the metal alkoxide precursor solution is mixed with 1-100mols of water based on 1mol of the titanium alkoxide or barium alkoxide and gelatinized and the gel is dried and baked to give a sintered compact having <=100nm particle diameters.
