PURPOSE: To provide an image compression device which can vary the scattering of pixel components after orthogonal conversion to prevent the deterioration in picture quality due to quantization and also to improve the image compressibility. CONSTITUTION: An orthogonal converter 3 applies the orthogonal conversion to the pixel data and outputs these converted data to a pattern generator 4. The generator 4 turns the received data into a pattern in terms of the component characteristic. A pattern adaptor 5 compares an inputted pattern with its contained plural patterns and sorts it into the most similar pattern. A block converter 8 changes the pixel data in response to the sorting information, and an orthogonal converter 9 applies the orthogonal conversion to the changed pixel data. |
