PURPOSE: To obtain a high-mol.wt. olefin polymer having a narrow mol.wt. distribution by using a polymn. catalyst comprising a novel transition metal (esp. Ti) compd., an activating cocatalyst such as a compd. which combines with the foregoing compd. to form an ionic complex, and an organoaluminum compd. CONSTITUTION: The olefin polymn. catalyst comprises a new compd. (A) represented by formula I [wherein M is a metal of the groups 3-10 or a lanthanoid metal; A is a cross-linking atom (or group) ; D and E are each aσ-bonded or coordinate-bonded cross-linking atom (or group) having an electron pair capable of being donated to M; X is a ligandσ-bonded to M; Y is a Lewis base; n, m, and p are each 1-20; q is the valence of M minus 2, being 1-5; r is 0-3; and R<1> to R<4> are each H, halogen, an optionally halogenated hydrocarbon group, or an Si- or hetroatom-contg. group], a compd. (B) which combines with compd. A or its deriv. to form an ionic complex, and if necessary an organoaluminum compd. (C). An example of compd. A is represented by formula II. Examples of compd. B are tetraethylammonium tetraphenylborate, an aluminoxane. and a Lewis acid. The catalyst is supported by Al2 O3 , etc., before use.
