Prodn. of embryogenic conifer callus comprises culturing somatic tissue, capable of growth, from a conifer t form non-embryogenic callus (NEC). This is then cultured in presence of a nurse culture to form embryogenic callus (EC). Pref. somatic tissue is an explant of needle, bud, shoot or root tissue, partic. taken from a mature tree. The nurse culture comprises EC of juvenile origin, derived from the same species as the NEC being cultured with it.
