The optical telemetry system for detecting obstacles operates by transmission of light pulse which offer no danger to eyes, and uses optical triangulation. The light is derived from an LED or laser. The receiver (12) delivers two differential signals which are the sum of the ambient light, perturbations and reflected light pulses returned by the obstacle (7). The signals are amplified (13, 14) and then from these is subtracted a memorised value of the ambient light level (17, 18). After scaling (19, 20) the circuit provided a continuous electrical measurement signal available at the output (30). This is used to control a number of output interfaces (25, 31, 32, 33, 34).
