Maintaining cleanliness of a thread tension monitor (1) on a textile machine involves blowing a gas stream continuously or intermittently into the monitor housing (2) to keep away and/or remove impurities. Also claimed is a thread monitor (1) for carrying out the above method, having a tactile thread sensor (11), mounted in a housing (2) with its thread-contacting end extending out of the housing, and having a system (24,33) for signal generation on outward movement of the sensor. The housing has a wall section (19) with an entry opening (20), through which a gas stream is blown continuously or intermittently.
