PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a single-mode light wave guide fiber having low, non-zero dispersion over the wavelength range selected in advance. SOLUTION: A core contains a plurality of individual regions 2..., and the individual regions 2... have their refraction factor profiles and radii or widths respectively. When the sizes and shapes of the individual regions 2... are adjusted, a wave guide fiber having a set of characteristics suitable for a high- performance communication system can be formed. The dispersion inclination is maintained below 0.05ps/nm<2> -km in particular, and the absolute value of the total dispersion is maintained in the range of 0.5-3.5ps/nm-km over the wavelength range selected in advance. The zero-dispersion wavelength is maintained on the outside of a predetermined wavelength range, and the cutoff wavelength and mode field diameter are controlled at target values. |
