PURPOSE: To constitute a beam size converter which facilitates optical coupling with an optical fiber, as an unified body, without deteriorating basic characteristics of laser, by a simple manufacturing process. CONSTITUTION: On a substrate 1, the following are laminated in order; a first clad layer 2 of a conductivity type, a first optical waveguide layer 3, a second clad layer 4 of a conductivity type, a second waveguide layer 5 containing an active layer, and clad layers 6, 7 having the opposite conductivity type which are provided with a mesa stripe type ridge 8 lacking a part in the optical axis direction. The following are formed collectively in a body; a laser region 10 wherein the width W of the ridge is constant and the length is L1 , a taper region 11 wherein the width of the ridge is tapered in the optical axis direction and the length is L2 , and a directional coupler region 12 which lacks the ridge and has a length of L3 . |
