The dibenzyl-butyrolactone type lignans are secondary metabolites whose structure derives from the binding, by the β carbons of their side chain, of two 1- phenylpropane units with an additional ether bridge. These compounds are characterized by presenting the structural formula shown in Formula I. It has been found that when these molecules exhibit a 2R, 3R stereochemistry and certain functional groups (hydroxy, methylenedioxy or methoxy) in the 3', 4' and 3", 4" positions of the aromatic rings, they have a powerful nematostatic action against phytoparasitic nematodes. It is an object of the invention to define some previously undescribed substances for the control of phytoparasitic nematodes. It is also an object of the invention to give new uses to the dibenzyl-butyrolactone type lignans having the characteristics defined above, as nematostatic agents (they inhibit the hatching of the second-stage juveniles of cyst nematodes). Said uses are not obvious from the prior art. The object of the invention can be applied industrially as these lignans can be obtained both by chemical synthesis and directly from plants. <IMAGE>
