The diagnosis method of the invention implements a membrane pump to set an overpressure in the fuel vapor recovery system. According to the invention, after measuring a first time (TM1) for a membrane of the leak detection pump to pass from a high position (H) to a predetermined position (S), a predetermined pressure (P1) is maintained in the system while waiting for the drain valve to open. Then, a second time (TM2, TM'2) is measured for the membrane to pass from the high position (H) to the predetermined position (S) during the opening of the drain valve. The first and second times are compared and if the second time (TM2) is substantially lower than the first time (TM1), it can be ascertained that the drain valve is operating properly. The present invention relates more particularly to the motor vehicle industry.
