The spacer (1) which is attached to the brackets (20) supporting the gutter has a rigid, T-shaped bar (2). One end (31) has two hooks (4, 5) which clip over the outer edge (6) of the gutter. The hooks fit either side of the gutter bracket (24). At the other end (32) there are two vertical walls (33, 34). One rests against the inside of the gutter, the other has connectors (34, 36) which fit into the gutter bracket. These take the form of pins (35, 36) which fit into holes in the bracket. The bar has a horizontal surface (3) with one or more cylindrical rods (71) with conical heads (72) which can hold a grid (9) in place to protect the gutter.
