ANTIALIASING METHOD BY GRAY MASKING TECHNIQUE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for anti-aliasing the edge of a synthesized image by using a gray masking technique. SOLUTION: In a method for synthesizing anti-aliased edges for printing or displaying the edges with a gray-level reproducing device, pixels have the values decided based on the shade values and mask values of their adjacent pixels. The shade value of each pixel is decided by processing the pixel with respect to the sub-pixels constituting the pixel. To each of the sub-pixels, a mask value and shade value are assigned based on its position in the pixel and relative to its nearest adjacent pixel. Then the final output value to the pixel is decided by averaging the values of the sub-pixels thus obtained.
