Edge-illuminated sign with long-persistence white reflecting coating

The edge-illuminated sign involves the light (1) entering via the edge of a light-guiding plate (2) of clear transparent material contg. vol. scattering or forward scattering particles. It emerges through a diffuse white coating (3) whose fluorescence persists for a considerable time after the light has failed. The pictogram (4) is either screen-printed directly on the plate or introduced on a highly transparent sheet in front of it. The coating may cover the entire area of the plate, or leave a part (e.g. the edges) uncovered.
