The flat connecting and sealing material for use with surfaces and openings such as joints between similar or differing components has a plastics covering (2) in each direction, which is elastic and repels moisture. The plastics coating is connected on one or both sides with a material, which is absorbent and able to expand elastically. Where the plastics coating is applied to both sides of the base material, then the base material can be similar or different on each side. The absorbent and elastic material used is a textile material, preferably woven (8).
