A mechanism for locking and unlocking of a king pin of a fifth wheel. The mechanism includes a jaw member (92), a wedge member (76), a bumper member (106), and a lever member (80) interconnecting the jaw member (92), the wedge member (76), and the bumper member (106). A handle member (144) includes a handle extension member (146). The system may be operated by a two-way air cylinder (64), a one-way air cylinder (182) or, in an alternate embodiment, may be incorporated into an existing manually operated fifth wheel system as a retrofit assembly so as to convert existing fifth wheel locking mechanisms to the arrangement of the present invention.
