The recovery of phenols and other organic compounds from effluent water, comprises: (a) passing the effluent water over a combination of ionic exchanger beds, where the phenols are bound to strongly alkaline exchange media; (b) regenerating the strongly alkaline exchange medium, resulting in the elution of the phenol; (c) adjusting the pH value of the fluid contg. the phenol, to 4 -7 using an acid or acidic soln.; (d) passing the pH-adjusted fluid contg. phenol over an adsorbent resin surface, binding the phenols, and releasing water for re-use; and (e) regenerating the adsorbent resin surface by means of a polar solvent and the fluid, with its strong concn. of phenols, and recovering for re-use as appropriate.
