In a process to remove sulphur gases from esp. a fossil-fuelled power station, chalk particles or a suspension of a chalk hydrate are sprayed through nozzles into a gas washer (1). The novelty is that the gas washer (1) washing suspension (15) is enriched in a controlled manner with sulphate substances introduced in to the gas washer by a battery of jets (5; 6; 7). The pH-value in the gas washer (1) sump (4) is set, such that the regeneration of the magnesium hydroxide in the chalk hydrate solution is effected by the sulphur dioxide in the smoke gases (13). When first setting up the process, or if the smoke (13) has a high chloride content, or to achieve the desired sulphate concentration, chalk is used incorporating a high proportion of magnesium carbonate.
