摘要 A rotor (2) for an energy storage and conversion apparatus (1), comprising a first fibre reinforced composite cylinder (6) have a first diameter and a first critical speed, a second fibre reinforced composite cylinder (7) having a second diameter and a second critical speed and at least one end cap (8, 9) for supporting the cylinders (6, 7) coaxially with a finite air gap between the two cylinders (6, 7), wherein during rotation of the two cylinders (6, 7), in use, the first cylinder (6) reaches its critical speed before the second cylinder (7) and deforms sufficiently to interact with the second cylinder (7) such that the two cylinders (6, 7) act as one and the deformation of the first cylinder (6) is controlled while the first critical speed is passed. As a result, an energy storage and conversion apparatus incorporating such a rotor (2) can store a greater amount of energy because the rotor (2) can be constructed longer than a sub-critical rotor such that it can be operated in the super-critical speed range.
