A spring interior forming method and apparatus (30, 30a, 50, 80) provides a spring interior assembler (35, 35a, 55) and a coil row transfer station (40, 40a, 52) upstream of the assembler having at least one conveyor (35, 35a, 51) extending therethrough. A coil former (31, 31a, 31b, 56a, 56b) is provided at an upstream end of the conveyor and is operated through a plurality of cycles, each to feed one spring coil (32, 32a, 32b, 54a, 54b) onto the conveyor. Between consecutive cycles of the feeding of a spring onto the transfer conveyor (51), a stepper motor (53) or other servo-type motor advances the conveyor (51) a programmed distance, thereby providing the capability for obtaining different programmed spacings between coils on the rows presented by the transfer conveyor (51) to the transfer station (52).
