In order to improve a process for preparing polycarboxylic acid salts by oxidising polysaccharides with nitrogen dioxide/dinitrogen tetroxide, so that at least part of the primary alcohol groups of the polysaccharides may be converted into carboxyl groups, and by at least partially neutralising the resulting carboxylic acid groups, so that it may be easier to prepare solid neutralisation products, the solid polycarboxylic acid is mixed with a solid neutralising agent. The thus obtained polycarboxylates are used for example as builders or co-builders in washing or cleaning products.
