Prodn. of carboxylic acid esters of formula (I) comprises reacting a propene oligomer of formula (II) with CO and an alcohol of formula: R-OH in the presence of a catalytically active amt. of a Co cpd. at 150-350 bar pressure. In (I) and (II), R=1-8C alkyl, or 2-30C aminoalkyl; n=0-7, pref. 1-3. Also claimed are: (a) carboxylic acid esters of formula (III) in which R'=methyl, 3-8C alkyl or 2-30C aminoalkyl and n=1-7; and (b) 3,5-dimethyloctanoic-acid methyl ester.
