Waste free application of a decorative pattern or protective coating onto difficult or impossible to print substrates

A process for decorating plates or flexible webs or substrates which can not be printed directly, or if they can, only with great difficulty, or for protecting the decoration of plates or webs, comprises fusing a paper-like opaque, foamed, (un)printed plastic film onto the substrate by a combination of heat and pressure (the latter being applied from underneath in the case of a printed film). The fusing temp. is at least 10 (230) deg. C greater than the temp. on the backside of the substrate, or the m.pt. of the printed film is at least 10 (20) deg. C less than that of the underlay. Decorated plates or flexible web material prepd. by the above method are also claimed.
