Cement-bonded asbestos-contg. materials, partic. asbestos cement, are disposed of by crushing the material and forming into a sludge with water which is subjected to treatment to reduce moisture content to less than 20 wt.% before being supplied to a cement firing process. As a result of treatment by a semi-wet process in a rotary kiln at temps. greater than 1100 deg C, the asbestos fibres are converted to form a harmless hydraulic binder, partic. Portland cement.
