At the ends of each board, the underface of the board is rebated. The inner end of the rebate has a transverse groove which goes about a quarter of the way through the board. When the ends of two such boards are butted together, a metal plate with raised edges is placed into the rebates of both boards so that the raised edges fit into the grooves. The plate is slid to the middle of the underface and secured by woodscrews.
