Iron with a movable sole plate

The smoothing iron has a fixed sole plate (10) with heating elements (22) and a temp. control thermostat (24) and a moving sole plate (14) which is hinged elastically to the fixed one. The iron has an electromagnet (12) on the fixed sole plate, linked to an exciter, and the moving sole plate can be attracted locally to the fixed one. Elastic components (16) hold the moving sole plate away from the fixed one when the electromagnet is not excited and allow it to be attracted to the fixed one when excited. The electromagnet exciter comprises a detector with a contact which is actuated when the iron is picked up, causing the moving sole plate to be attracted to the fixed one, and which separates once the iron is put down, causing the moving sole plate to be detached from the fixed one.
