Abattoir waste is recycled into a usable material by heating the waste before further treatment. Heating occurs in an autoclave (3) to obtain a solid prod. (5) and a gas (4). The gas is passed to an incinerator (6), coupled to a steam generating boiler (10). Part of the steam is returned (16) to the autoclave and the remainder vented (17). Condensate is removed (15) from the autoclave and returned to the boiler to assist in steam generation. Also claimed is an appts. to carry out the method described above.
