The instrument (5), in this case a rev counter, has three input signals (11,13,15). One signal (11) is mechanically or electrically pre-set to a fixed value depending on the type of engine, scale factor etc. The second input (13) is rotational speed and the third (15) relates to temperature. The processor (9) contains high pass filters (97,97') and amplifiers (98,98'). One channel (51) drives the pointer; the other (52) adjusts the red sectors (7) of the scale to take account of, for example, engine temperature. Voltage sensitive LEDs can indicate different dynamic conditions. Integral lighting is used with coloured filters.
