PURPOSE: To economically obtain a trans-silacyclohexane compound useful as a material for liquid crystal display elements, etc., by carrying out steric isomerization of a cis-substance produced as a by-product comprising a non- liquid crystalline compound. CONSTITUTION: (A) A compound of formula I [R is a 1-10C straight-chain alkyl, a 1-10C mono or difluoroalkyl, etc.; Q is a group of formula II [the rings A and B are each independently cyclohexane, etc.; a ring C is cyclohexane, etc.; Z is CN, F, Cl, CF3 , etc.; (i1) to (i3) are each 0 or 1 and (i1)+(i2)+(i3)=1; (j1) to (j3) are each 0, 1 and 2 and (j1)+(j2)+(j3) are 0, 1 or 2]] is reacted with (B) an alcohol of the formula R'OH (R' is a 1-10C straight-chain alkyl or a 3-8C branched chain alkyl) in the presence of a transition metal catalyst to convert into (C) an alkoxysilanecyclohexane of formula III and then the compound of formula III is reduced to provide (D) the objective trans-silacyclohexane compound of formula IV reversed in steric configuration in regard to a silacyclohexane ring of a starting substance. |
