PURPOSE: To produce an aryl carbonate in high selectivity and in high yield by reducing formation of by-products. CONSTITUTION: This method for producing an aryl carbonate comprises transesterifying an arylhydroxy compound with a carbonate of the general formula R<1> OCOOR<2> (R<1> is a 1-10C alkyl group; R<2> is a 1-10C alkyl group or a 6-15C aryl group) in the presence of molybdenum (VI) oxide and/or vanadium (V) oxide. Molybdenum (VI) oxide and/or vanadium (V) oxide is preferably supported on silica gel and/or a silica porous material of crystalline meso-porous silicate or an inorganic oxide carrier of zirconia or titania. Especially the raw material aryl hydroxy compound is phenol and the carbonate is dimethyl carbonate. Methyl phenyl carbonate and/or diphenyl carbonate is produced, and further, similarly disproportionation reaction carried out to produce diphenyl carbonate is preferable. |
