PURPOSE: To obtain the subject new compound useful for a medicine, cosmetic, food, table luxuries, etc., having excellent water solubility, shelf stability and antimicrobial activity, by treating a mixture of 2-phenoxyethanol and a dextrin with an enzyme. CONSTITUTION: This new odorless compound of 2-phenoxyethyl-α-D- glucopyranoside is shown by the formula, has excellent water solubility, shelf stability and antimicrobial activity and is useful as an antimicrobial agent for a medicine, cosmetic, food, table luxuries, etc. The compound is obtained by treating a mixture of 2-phenoxyethanol and a dextrin or a dextrin-containing substance with cyclodextrin glucanotransferase derived from Bacillus stearothermophilus or a cell containing cyclodextrin glucanotransferase, extracting unreacted raw materials with chloroform, removing the extracted raw materials, treating the remained substance by an adsorbing resin column, eluting the adsorbed substance with methanol and concentrating the eluted solution under reduced pressure. |
