PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for measuring a bookbinding caliper reduced in an influence of a mechanical vibration. SOLUTION: The apparatus comprises a movable member 60. Its outer circumferential surface engages a collated assemblage on a collating conveyor to compress the collated assemblage when the member 60 is moved toward the assemblage. A light source 36 directs light 31 toward the outer circumferential surface of the member. The outer surface has a light reflective surface against which the light 38 is directed and then reflected. The reflected light 38 has a characteristic which varies as a function of the thickness of the assemblage. The reflected light is sensed and a first electrical signal is provided which varies as a function of the thickness of the assemblage. An electrical circuit detects a value of the first electrical signal corresponding to a maximum compressed condition of the assemblage, holds the value for at least a predetermined time period, and provides a second electrical signal indicative of whether or not the value of the first signal is within a predetermined value range.
