PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to diminish the temperature gradient within the edges to be welded if a welding speed is the same, thereby making it possible to make the welding speed higher than heretofore or to weld such materials which lead to the degradation in the quality of welding at a high temperature gradient. SOLUTION: Both edges 3.1 and 3.2 to be welded of sheets or container bodies are positioned relatively to each other and are guided to a welding station by guide means. At the time of welding to each other in the welding station, the edges 3.1 and 3.2 to be welded of the sheets or container bodies are preheated by a converged laser beam 9 prior to the welding.
