A magnetic recording medium that includes underlying layers (12, 12') of a cubic system and Co alloy magnetic layers (13, 13') of hcp structure one over another on a substrate (11). This medium has a product of residual flux density and film thickness between 10 and 150 G. mu m, and a coercive force of at least 20,000 e. The c-axis length of the magnetic films (13, 13') is at least 4.105 ANGSTROM and the length of the a-axis of the underlying films (12, 12') multiplied by 2ROOT 2 is 0.1 to 1.5 % greater than the c-axis length of the magnetic film (13, 13'). The present invention can realize a magnetic recording medium capable of securing a high S/N at the time of high density recording and a large capacity magnetic memory device using the medium, and can also realize a high quality reproduction output and an extremely low error rate.
