VIBRATIONALLY ISOLATED CRYOGENIC DEVICE

A cryogenic cold head (18) in a canister (14) is partially surrounded by an isolation mass (32). An open portion of the mass (32) permits access for connection of a vapor compression refrigeration unit (22) to the cold head (18), which is highly conductive. Straps (34) of braided copper suspend the isolation mass (32) from the cold head (18), made cold by the refrigeration unit (22). A temperature differential between the cold head (18) and a device-mounting interface (38) on the isolation mass (32) is preferably less than 2.5K per watt of heat transferred. For further vibration isolation, the device (12) is separated from the isolation mass (32) by another braided strap (24) and supported in the canister (14) by struts (16).
