In a method of fashioning a protective structure (1) for reels of cable, wire etc., a continuous plastic film (2) is decoiled from a roll (6), bunched into a stout cord (7) and wrapped around the reel (3), supported with its axis (3a) horizontally disposed, in such a way as to form a succession of staves (11) covering the surface of revolution (8) of the reel and a succession of bands interconnecting the staves on opposite sides of the circumference; the bands extend across the flanges (9) of the reel coinciding with chords (12) that are distanced from the axis (3a) so as to leave the central area (22) of the flanges (9) uncovered, thereby exposing the holes (4) from which the reel is lifted and carried, and the identification labels (5).
