The protected unit (1) carries a vehicle-specific security code (2) on its outer casing which can be read by a unit (3) in close proximity but not in contact. The same code is stored in a controller (5) connected to the code reader by a signal line (4). If the codes do not correspond, the function of the protected unit is inhibited. The serial number of the vehicle may be used as a code, entered by the manufacturer and modified if desired in an authorised workshop.
