The procedure de-infests objects or substances stored in the volume under treatment. A nitrogen generator raises the internal nitrogen concn. During a set treatment period, the internal atmosphere is withdrawn, to be depleted in oxygen and returned. In the novel procedure, internal- and ambient air are passed through a molecular sieve- and/or a membrane filter plant (4), removing oxygen from the nitrogen, which is then re-introduced to the treated volume (1). Extraction from the volume is controlled between internal lower- (A) and upper- (B) pressure limits. Recirculation and oxygen extraction continue down to the lower pressure limit. At this point, the plant (4) takes in ambient air, and supplies nitrogen to the volume, until the upper pressure limit (B) is reached. Also claimed is the plant to carry out the procedure.
