The water-cooled IC engine is of the indirect combustion type with piston (3), cylinder (1) and cylinder head (5). A cylindrical channel (7) connects the cylinder (1) and the hemispherical chamber (11). Fuel from the injector (13) nozzle forms a divergent spray (35) to strike a section (39) of the sidewall (37) of the conical glow plug (16). No fuel is directed at the apex (41) in order to avoid carbonisation. A turbulent fuel flow assures flame stability. The injector has a four-channelled, grooved spindle that feeds into a swirl chamber to achieve the required nozzle delivery performance.
