A light guide unit (626) for a liquid crystal display device (600) comprises: a body consisting of a plurality of laminated light guides (411) and having an outgoing surface on one side; a reflecting plate (413) disposed on the other side of said body; and means (412) disposed between said body and said reflecting plate (413) for changing the polarization direction of light; wherein said plurality of light guides (411) are laminated aslant the width direction of said main unit body. By such means, the utilizing efficiency of light is improved by making available at least part of the polarized component that has formerly been unused for obtaining the polarization.
