<p>An improved trip device (95) for operating a trip mechanism (155) which, in turn, operates a circuit breaker mechanism (39) for opening a set of electrical contacts (21, 23). The trip device (95) includes a spring-biased actuating rod (137) which is mechanically operated by a solenoid (189). The actuating rod (137) has a notched end (209) which is secured by a rotatable shaft (215) at a notch portion (215a) of the shaft (215). The shaft (215) has latch arms (223, 225), and the core (193) of the solenoid (189) has projections (201, 203) extending into slots (223a, 225a) in the latch arms (223, 225). When the solenoid (189) receives a faulty current signal, the core (193) moves and causes the projections (201, 203) to forcibly impact against the latch arms (223, 225) which rotates the shaft (215), whereby the notch portion (215a) of the shaft (215) aligns with the notched end (209) of the actuating rod (137) and the actuating rod (137) reciprocally moves into the notched portion (215a) of the shaft (215) thereby actuating the trip mechanism (155). <IMAGE></p> |
