PURPOSE: To raise the temp. rise velocity of the whole catalyst device to speed up the activation of a catalyst on startup by differentiating the thickness or the like of a flat plate-shaped and a corrugated plate-shaped belt member as they proceed from the central region to on the peripheral edge sides to enlarge the electric resistance value of an electric current fed at the central region. CONSTITUTION: A carrier is constituted by winding plural layer plates alternately provided with flat plate-shaped belt members and corrugated plate-shaped belt members in a spiral. The thickness of the flat plate-shaped belt member and corrugated plate- shaped belt member or the corrugated plate pitch of the corrugated belt member is differentiated as they proceed from a central region (a) to a peripheral edge side (b) to enlarge the electric resistance value per unit length of an electric current fed to the carrier at the central region (a) compared to on the carrier peripheral edge side (b). In this way, the temp. rise of the carrier in the central region (a) in which a flow rate of waste gas is large is rapidly performed, and this becomes the starting point of catalyst activation to also allow the catalyst activation to spread to the peripheral edged side (b). In the whole region from the central region (a) to the peripheral edge side (b), a catalyst rapidly responds to the startup of an engine to improve the purifying efficiency of waste gas. |
