PURPOSE: To provide an ink jet printer in which the recovering operation of a plurality of heads can be efficiently conducted without waste and a method for recovering the head. CONSTITUTION: An ink jet printer selectively or simultaneously mounts a plurality of cartridges 21 having heads for discharging ink, and comprises a timer 104 backed up by a power source 106 to measure a time, a nonvolatile memory 107 for storing the lapse time from the previous recovering times of the cartridges 21 by individually managing, and a recovering unit 31 for recovering the heads of the corresponding cartridge 31 when the lapse time becomes a predetermined set value or more. |
