PURPOSE: To provide a new compound excellent in solubility in water and storage stability, having an antimicrobial activity, and useful as an antimicrobial agent for medicines, cosmetics, foods, etc., obtained by treating 2-phenoxyethanol and lactose with β-galactosidase. CONSTITUTION: Non-smelling new 2-phenoxyethyl-β-D-galactopyranoside is represented by the formula, is excellent in solubility in water and storage stability, has an antimictrocbial activity, and is useful as an antimicrobial agent for medicines, cosmetics, foods, favorite foods, etc. The compound is obtained by dissolving the mixture of 2-phenoxyethanol with lactose or a lactose- containing substance in a 10mM phosphate buffer solution (pH: 7.0), treating the solution with β-galactosidase originated from Aspergillus oryzae on-cells containing the β-galactosidase at 40 deg.C for 5hrs, extracting and removing the non-reacted raw materials from the reaction solution with chloroform, allowing the aqueous solution to pass through an adsorption resin column, extracting the adhered substances with methanol, and subsequently vacuum-concentrating the extract. |
