PURPOSE:To enhance steering performance by dividing a steering shaft into an input shaft and output shaft parallel to each other and connecting them through a gear type speed change mechanism for allowing the mechanism to switch the gear ratio of the mechanism according to car speed and others. CONSTITUTION:A steering shaft 1 is divided into an input shaft 3 and the output shaft 4 connected to a steering mechanism, and the lower end section 3a of the input shaft 3 and the upper end section 4a of the output shaft 4 are arranged so as to be parallel to each other. And the first gear 5 and the second gear 6 composed of a plurality of bevel gears whose number of teeth is different from each other respectively are axially spaced it the specified interval with the inclined tooth section opposed to each other at the lower end section 3a of the input shaft 3. And the gear body 9 provided integrally with the third and fourth bevel gears 7 and 8 which are selectively engageable with respective gears 5 and 6 are splinedly fitted to the upper section 4a of the output shaft 4. And the gear body 9 is axially deviated by a shift fork 10 by means of a proper actuator, which changes gear ratios.
