PURPOSE: To enhance the efficiency of utilizing air in a main chamber to reduce the period of combustion in the main chamber for enhanced thermal efficiency by permitting a jet injected into the main chamber from an auxiliary chamber through communicating holes to be guided toward cylinder wall surfaces. CONSTITUTION: A main chamber 1 formed on the side of a cylinder 3 and an auxiliary chamber 2 provided in a piston 8 are communicated with each other by means of a plurality of communicating holes 4 so formed to incline toward the circumference of the cylinder. A fuel injection nozzle 10 is made to project, near top dead center, into a nozzle hole 15 formed at almost the center of the piston top, to inject fuel into the auxiliary chamber 2. Guide grooves 7 extending in the direction of the cylinder wall surface from main-chamber side openings 17 in the communicating holes 4 are formed in the piston top face 13. The guide grooves 7 are shaped to curve in the forward direction of intake swirl and to expand shallow toward the cylinder wall surface.
