A controlled release pharmaceutical dosage formulation comprising microgranules of an active substance, such as theophylline, ketorolac-trometamine and naproxene, having dimensions such as to be easily kept in suspension in a liquid medium; and a plurality of layers coating such microgranules for controlling the release of the active substance contained in the microgranules at a predetermined time, and at the same time maintaining the release characteristics stable for long periods of time. The coated microgranules can be provided in a ready-to-use liquid suspension or as a solid mixture which can be suspended in a liquid vehicle at the moment of usage. The liquid vehicle may contain an immediately available quantity of the active substance.
